Modern Healthcare Infrastructure

Challenge

In 2012, a hospital within a large regional healthcare system faced challenges due to the lack of a modern data center. The existing space for the data center was inadequate, which hindered the hospital's ability to effectively implement its information technology (IT) master plan. This plan included the introduction of new systems and applications, such as Epic, a comprehensive electronic health record. Built in 1910, the hospital needed a long-term solution to ensure the stability required for its expanding IT environment, which operates across multiple states and integrates with the broader healthcare system.

Approach

Over 15 years ago, the hospital's leadership engaged the Leading Edge Design Group (LEDG) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of their data center. The goal was to understand their overall technology requirements and explore options for modernizing and scaling their technology infrastructure. This assessment provided the hospital's leadership team with a framework to build upon, including an innovative design and implementation plan developed by LEDG.

LEDG proposed two options: one involved renovating the current data center, while the other suggested creating a new data center adjacent to the existing one. It was clear that a new data center would not only allow for the adoption of the best practices in high-density design, redundancy, and energy efficiency, but it would also minimize the impact on existing and planned technology systems.

Fast forward to 2025, the healthcare system has sought LEDG's expertise for data center advisory and modernization services. It has expanded the data center and established edge networks throughout various locations, resulting in reduced latency and improved responsiveness to support advancements in medical and IT technologies. Additionally, LEDG provides the hospital's team with expertise in power and cooling, as well as support for UPS and cooling maintenance contracts and upgrades for power and battery modules.

Results

The hospital delivers seamless, coordinated care to patients across urban and rural communities, backed by a trusted regional healthcare network committed to providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
