University Data Centers & HPC Excellence

INDUSTRY CHALLENGE

Institutions are facing a growing demand for high-performance computing (HPC), increased research data requirements, and the need for resilient and scalable data center infrastructure. In each case, their existing environments were aging, space-constrained, unreliable, or unable to support evolving computational needs. The universities needed more than one-time upgrades; they required a trusted partner to guide their long-term strategy, design, execution, and operations.

For over a decade, LEDG has partnered with leading U.S. universities to design, modernize, and sustain mission-critical digital infrastructure that supports research, instruction, and operational excellence. These enduring relationships encompass prominent Ivy League institutions, multi-campus state university systems, and private institutions that demonstrate LEDG’s ability to deliver long-term value through deep technical expertise, responsive service, and a shared commitment to mission-critical academic innovation.

APPROACH

LEDG was selected to lead the design and development of primary data centers and high-performance computing facilities. The work began with detailed assessments to align infrastructure capabilities with institutional goals. It expanded over the years to encompass complete design-build services, phased modernization programs, and ongoing maintenance and support.

Key services include:

  • End-to-end data center design and construction from early programming and conceptual design to commissioning and turnover.
  • HPC-ready infrastructure with specialized cooling, power distribution, and space planning to support intensive computational loads.
  • Modernization and system upgrades to support infrastructure optimization to enhance resiliency, energy efficiency, and performance.
  • Long-term service of maintenance contracts for proactive maintenance and modernizations to protect uptime and extend infrastructure life.

As the landscape of research and academic computing evolved with the advancement of generative AI, institutions once again turned to LEDG to help shape their strategy for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Having earned their trust over many years, LEDG was engaged to assess AI workload readiness, evaluate capacity and energy needs, and guide the roadmap for scalable, AI-enabled environments that support cutting-edge research and collaboration with prominent health and sciences organizations.

RESULTS

Throughout these multi-year engagements, LEDG helped universities:

  • Deploy modern, scalable infrastructure that supports growing research and administrative workloads.
  • Maintain high availability and exceptional performance across mission-critical systems.
  • Upgrade physical and technology systems without disrupting operations or uptime.
  • Extend the lifecycle of infrastructure assets through strategic reinvestment, expert maintenance, and modernization.
  • Align infrastructure roadmaps with AI strategy, enabling secure, scalable, sustainable support for advanced computing initiatives.
